During the early 90's, during the continuing development of the E30 M3 DTM race cars, the M3s was fitted with 18" wheels. To clear these larger wheels and tires with its race car ride hight, BMW designed taller fenders (wings to our european friends) with more outer clearance.
Due to Homologation rules at the time, a road going production version must also be fitted with the same body work to be racing legal, so thus the Sport Evo also had these taller arch fenders.

These fenders are Genuine OEM BMW and directly replace your standard front fenders.
If you have a very low ride hight, and are rubbing your outside fender- but are not able to roll your fender, the Sport Evo fenders work well.

-These are great if you want a 100% Evo 3 replica.
-Additional clearance for 18" wheels and tires if you are fitting that large
-If you want to keep your M3 looking as low to the ground as possible, these are not recommended as the higher wheel arch exaggerates wheel gap.
